Scoop

Pick up the ball and run into space, then pass before you are touched. This is a Scoop. A teammate must be ready behind you to receive; picking up quickly on your own is not enough.

When and why

Pick up the ball and run into space, then pass before you are touched. This is a Scoop. A teammate must be ready behind you to receive; picking up quickly on your own is not enough.

What each person does

Put the ball down, then receive · M1
After being touched, put the ball on the touch spot for the restart (rollball). Move clear and be ready behind the teammate who picks it up.
Pick up, run and pass · M2
Pick up from the ground. You are now dummy-half: pass before you are touched, or your team loses the ball. You cannot score while still dummy-half.

The tags let you follow the same people in each picture and animation. They are not shirt numbers; you do not need to know position names first.

Put down and move clear

M1 puts the ball down after the touch. M2 follows to pick it up.

Where do the six players stand?

Here is a simple starting picture of the six players on your team. They do not stay in these spots throughout the game.

Middle (also called centre), link and wing describe positions. Carrying the ball and being dummy-half are jobs that can change hands. Dummy-half means the player who picks up after a teammate puts the ball down for the restart (rollball).

How to watch

Read the three pictures first, then watch the animation below. The same tags identify the same people; they are not shirt numbers. A rollball is putting the ball down at the touch spot for the next teammate to pick up.

Animated Scoop sequenceThe attack targets a defender who is slow to get back. The M1 continues left while the M2 scoops right and draws the touching defender’s attention. The M2 passes backward to the M1, who maintains full pace while the defender who made the touch reacts and chases too late.D1D2D3D4D5D6LWL1M1M2L2RW

Now

The central defender makes the touch: the tired defender is the target.

The defender who made the touch is slow to reset and now has the longest retreat in the line.

There is space to run

Notice
The defender is still moving back.
Respond
Pick up, use the space and pass backwards to your ready teammate before being touched.
Why
The gap may close quickly.
Evidence and rules

Match clips illustrate opportunities and defensive recovery. The animation is a teaching example, not a guarantee of a break.

One thing to notice next time

Watch the person who puts the ball down. Are they ready behind the ball when the pickup player needs to pass?
